NFL Draft’s QB class is more chaotic than ever. How will it affect Patriots? (2025)

For the New England Patriots, the dream scenario is pretty simple. If two quarterbacks go in the top three picks, it’s good news. At that point, they’d be guaranteed to get either Penn State EDGE Abdul Carter or Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.

Will that happen? With nine days until Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, the answer is less clear than ever.

As things stand, it looks like the Tennessee Titans will take Miami QB Cam Ward at No. 1. But will the Cleveland Browns at No. 2 or New York Giants at No. 3 take this year’s second quarterback?

Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders has been projected as the No. 2 quarterback for months. But now, even that has been thrown into question.

Let’s start with the Browns, who have been a wild card through the draft process. The team is in an unprecedented quarterback quagmire. They’re paying a king’s ransom to Deshaun Watson, who will miss the year with an Achilles injury.

Outside of him, the Browns brought in Kenny Pickett and recently signed veteran Joe Flacco. But that doesn’t rule out a QB. According to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns “still have Sanders in their sights at No. 2.″

Take that with a grain of salt. Contradictory reports have trickled out that Cleveland is targeting Colorado CB/WR Travis Hunter with that pick.

As for the Giants, things are even less clear. New York brought in a pair of veteran quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. However, many analysts believe that the Giants could still use the No. 3 pick to take a quarterback.

Sanders has been a popular projection at No. 3. But things may have gotten a little more complicated there. ESPN reports that Giants personnel have taken a last-minute trip to Boulder to have another visit with Sanders.

Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum says that it likely isn’t good news.

“When this happens so late in the process either there’s a big disagreement in their building on their evaluation or (they’re) reacting to new information,” Tannenbaum wrote on social media.

But is Sanders even going to be the second quarterback taken? Even that idea is being challenged.

On Tuesday, former ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay released his most recent mock draft. In it, he had Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart going at No. 9 overall to the Saints. He then had the Browns trade up to No. 15 to draft Sanders.

So where does that leave the Patriots? It’s looking less and less likely that they’ll be seeing two quarterbacks go ahead of them, based on recent reports.

If that happens, we’ll likely see some combination of Carter and Hunter going at No.2 and No. 3. That leaves New England with their choice of this year’s second-tier prospects.

That includes LSU tackle Will Campbell, who is highly decorated and fills a need (but has drawn criticism for his arm length). Other options include Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham, Georgia pass rusher Jalon Walker or Missouri tackle Armand Membou.

Things can change quickly when it comes to the NFL Draft, so nothing is locked in yet. But for now, don’t expect a quarterback frenzy in the top three.
